Video Hardware with Character Map Demo (Intro to Using Video 1 of 3)

Reading Time: 1 min read

Description #

The Propeller 2 can output video directly, including HDMI, DVI, VGA, Composite, Component (Y, Cr, Cb) & S-VIDEO.

This is the first of a three-part series that shows how to display characters, and images, and how to mix them together. With this guide, we demonstrate the hardware you need to output HDMI/DVI or VGA.

The P2 Edge 32MB module is equipped with enough memory to buffer text and graphics for large resolution displays. The P2 microcontroller can drive multiple video screens, in multiple formats, simultaneously from its 64 Smart Pins, and is ideal for displaying real-time information from multiple sources on small or large displays.

This guide includes code that displays a font character map on an HDMI/DVI or VGA monitor. The character map viewer code demonstrates a few functions available in our Simple Video Driver, including importing bitmap logos, drawing lines, formatting numbers as strings, and writing text.

Future demonstrations will include step-by-step detail on how to create your own graphical display projects, including background graphics and sprites.
